How it works

Family Help Program is a distance treatment service developed to provide up-to-date, evidence-based primary care for families whose children have mild to moderate problems.

Families have easy access to services at times convenient to them.

  • Treatment is delivered via educational (self-help) handbooks and videos
  • Once-a-week telephone contact with a trained coach who reinforces information outlined in the materials

Advantages

  • Treats problems early before they become worse and are more difficult to manage.
  • Many referral options based on agency preference ie:
    • Capebreton and IWK through their Mental Health Central Referral Agency.
    • Colchester/East Hants and Cumberland direct referrals through calling Family help, family physician, or other source.
  • Referral Process time: 2-3 days
  • Families receive

    • Privacy by learning at home
